What is Distance education?
Distance education
can be defined as education that takes place when the teacher and student
are separated by space or time. The gap between the two can be bridged
through the use of technology - audio tapes, videoconferencing, satellite
broadcasts and online technology, and/or more traditional delivery. This
term has traditionally implied the higher education level. Such units or
courses may require attendance at a weekend seminar at a centre or campus.
It is also known as flexible delivery. Distance education can be made up of
correspondence courses, which primarily consisted of print media when it
first became popular in the 1980s, but is mostly carried out online today.
Correspondence courses are units completed from a distance using written
correspondence (both through the mail and via email) for interaction and to
submit assignments.
Distance education is offered by a variety of institutions, including
colleges, traditional universities as well as online universities, and
specialist correspondence only colleges. Correspondence courses are
available at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, in a diverse range of
areas- both academic and practical. It is advised that whenever signing up
with a college for a correspondence course that you check their credentials
and ensure they are an accredited educational institution. It is important
that whatever credentials you will receive through completing the course
will be recognised by future employers and/or other educational bodies if
you wanted to continue your education on-campus.
Advantages of Correspondence Courses
Distance education has several advantages over traditional education,
including increased flexibility, lower costs (such as travel costs and
fees), less time travelling, as well as being able to study at your own
pace. You can continue with your full time or part time job while studying
with a correspondence course, as well as have time for hobbies, volunteer
work, looking after family or travelling abroad. There are a wider range of
learning methods available, so you can decide on a method that best suits
your learning style. Distance education allows you to study efficiently and
conveniently while still maintaining all the advantages of the traditional
degree. You can study according to your own hours, with none of the lecture,
assignment and exam schedules that conventional classroom learning has.
